Deepfake technology is fueling a global surge in scams, using AI-manipulated videos of celebrities like Virat Kohli and Cristiano Ronaldo to promote fraudulent apps. Learn how scammers create fake Play Stores, target users across continents, and how to protect yourself from these sophisticated cyber threats during the Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
A recent investigation by cybersecurity firm CloudSEK exposed a widespread deepfake video scam involving well-known personalities. The scheme, which initially targeted the EU in early September 2024, has since spread to India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, and Southeast Asia.
These scams feature manipulated videos of prominent figures, including Virat Kohli, Neeraj Chopra, Cristiano Ronaldo, Mr. Beast, and even Pakistani actress Hania Aamir. The videos falsely show these high-profile individuals promoting a mobile gaming app named Aviator, enticing users with promises of multiplying their investments with minimal effort.
In some versions of the scam, Indian news anchors like Shweta Singh, Arnab Goswami, and Sudhir Chaudhary are also depicted, providing a misleading sense of credibility. The manipulated news coverage claims that millions of people have already profited from the app, adding to the scam’s deceptive allure. CloudSEK also launched its advanced Deep Fake Detection Technology, now available for free. The technology assesses deep fake content using several sophisticated analysers, including a Video Fakeness Analyzer for manipulated faces, an Audio Fakeness Analyzer for synthetic sounds, and a Texture Uniformity Analyzer for inconsistencies in visuals.
